A BRITISH karting champion raised more than £16,000 for Addenbrooke’s Hospital this weekend, as he got behind the wheel for an epic endurance test.

Sam Tomlinson was at Snetterton race track for Round 6 of the National Dunlop Britcar Endurance Champion-ship on Saturday, taking third place in the first race and a win in the second. He was joined by family friend Will Stacey, the youngest UK Lotus Champion, and rode the Ginetta G55 Supercup car.

Sam’s initial fundraising target was £5,000, with £16,425.97 currently raised – and donations are still open.

The hospital is a cause very close to Sam’s heart as his daughter Molly was the fourth person in the world diagnosed with a rare condition when she was born last December, which affected the development of numerous organs, namely her heart and lungs.

Molly died earlier this year, and Sam wanted to give back to Addenbrooke’s for the help they gave the family during this time, with the JustGiving page created while Molly was still receiving treatment.

The champion racer said: “Molly, our daughter, was born at Addenbrooke’s on December 28 and was soon diagnosed with a very rare gene abnormality called CHOPS Syndrome, where we were told she was the fourth recorded person in the world to have this.

“After two weeks at Great Ormond Street for a heart operation and 101 days (his race number for the day was #101) in a neonatal intensive care unit, Molly came home on oxygen.

After 12 days Molly sadly passed away at home surrounded by all of our friends and family.

We have had an amazing response to this fundraiser, not just from friends and family but from famous Le Mans racing drivers to international reality TV stars and, overwhelmingly, people we don’t know. It’s been incredible and we would just like to say a huge thank you to everyone that has supported us.

I would like to thank all of our sponsors for this weekend that truly made this event happen, RVS Tec, Skip UK, Camclad Steelworks, BRUCE, Headley Tyres and Martin Tomlinson Motorsport Art too.”
